Uchiwa is a play on words as it can be 'fan' ( 団扇) but uchi (家) can mean house and our , written as ha (は) but pronounced wa. Therefore, Uchiwa Ramen can be “fan ramen” ( 団扇ラメン) Or "our house is ramen" (家はラメン) Finally, “uchi” used in the term “uchi-soto” refers to an “insider-outsider” relationship. In Japan, this term expresses the deep desire of the insider to help the outsider feel welcome, usually referring to going to any and all extremes to be hospitable to a guest.

We did a road trip from Portland Oregon to try out this ramen while in San Rafael. Didn't get to stay long, but our short experience was nice. Friendly staff and good ramen. We had a few small sides that were also really good. I cannot wait to make another trip to Uchiwa Ramen and stay longer next time. Thanks Angel for the good conversation and wonderful food. Uchiwa Ramen is an excellent ran restaurant! The Staff and Chefs are incredibly nice and welcoming! The food is tremendous packed with lots of flavor without being over powering! I highly recommend this place! When I visit again I will be back!
